Washington, DC – The Governing Majority Education Fund (TGMEF), an organization dedicated to promoting center-right policy solutions and advancing responsible governance through research, education and grassroots engagement, issued the following response to the House Freedom Caucus calling for an end to the bipartisan negotiations on the debt limit.

“The American people expect our political leaders in Washington to negotiate in good faith and reach consensus on the most pressing problems facing our nation.  Just as President Biden and Senate Democrats need to better recognize that Republicans control the House of Representatives and will have a say in the final package, some Republican members must recognize that Democrats control both the Senate and Presidency.  To end bipartisan negotiations on the debt limit, spending cuts and deficit reduction is exactly the opposite of what our leaders in Washington should be doing,” stated Former Member of Congress and TGMEF Board Member John Katko.

“Not only is the position of the House Freedom Caucus short-sighted for the future of our nation, it abandons the House Republican leadership and Republican negotiators at the most critical time during these negotiations.  Additionally, it demonstrates a fundamental disregard by the Freedom Caucus of the Republican members in marginal districts who supported the House GOP’s debt limit position in April to advance negotiations, knowing they would be relentlessly targeted by political opponents for that vote.  The Freedom Caucus should be standing in unity with its Republican Conference colleagues, rather than what appears to be a premature effort to lay the foundation for a ‘NAY’ vote on the final agreement,” added Drew Kent, Executive Director of TGMEF.
